Lugoff Bassmasters Tournament Report: Lake Murray, 7 Jun 09
The
Lugoff Bassmasters held their 11th tournament of the season on Lake
Murray on 7 June. Anglers blasted off at 0550 into the strong NE wind
and a heavy haze. Water temperatures ranged from about 78 to 83
degrees. As the day wore on the winds died down and the haze
burned off, and the sun and pleasure boaters hit the water. Most
anglers reported that the morning bite was best and that bites were
hard to get. As always, someone always seems to catch them. This
month Gene Gibbs was the man, despite only being able to fish a few
hours due to family circumstances. Our thoughts and prayers are
with you and your family during these rough times.Gene managed to put
a 13 lb sack in the boat. Dale Goff came in 2nd and Jim Timmerberg
managed another 3rd.
Getting details is like pulling teeth most of the time, but it
seems like soft plastics worked the best. Shakey head, c-rig, and t-rig seemed
to produce the most fish. It looked like areas from Shull Island and up past
the Gap accounted for most of the catch. Bass were caught mainly on points and
shoals, and grass and rocks/docks gave up some keepers. Bass were caught both
shallow and deep.
The clubs final tournament of the season will be on Lake Wateree on 11
July. The meeting will be on 9 July. Members are reminded to bring their dream
sheets so that we can set next year's schedule. Hopefully, everyone will be
able to make the meeting! Voting will take place on club officers at that
meeting also. Members also voted to postpone the team tournament until the
August.
The points race for Angler of the Year and the
6-man team is really coming down to the wire. With only 1 tournament left, this
race is still too close to call. Lake Wateree will prove interesting.
Gene Gibbs has won 3 in a row and looks unstoppable. You can never count Dale
Goff out, and Red Shad Jim still hasn't picked up a win this year. Earnie Jones has some
ground to make up if he's to make the 6-man team but still has a shot at it. In a little over a
month from now, we'll know the end of the story. Stay tuned!
